Leeuwarden by-pass
2011, Leeuwarden, The Netherlands
The extension of the N31 highway around Leeuwarden needs a design to embed the "Haak om Leeuwarden" into the Frisian landscape. Because the new highway runs through the historic Middelzee area, the metaphor of the "terp" was used to create both a natural link to the landscape as well as a landmark in that landscape to emphasize the transition to the city of Leeuwarden.
The tunnels connecting the local (slow traffic) roads will be decorated with tiles produced by "de Koninklijke Tichelaar" in Makkum. On a number of these tiles abstracted images of important women from the city of Leeuwarden will be printed.
